Why registration is usually there
It is worth being clear about what a sign-up form is for, because it is rarely for you. An email address makes you contactable for marketing. A phone number makes you uniquely identifiable across accounts and is the basis of most ad targeting. An app install grants background permissions and a persistent identifier. A profile makes you comparable to other users, which is what enables the ranking and paywall mechanics further down the funnel.
None of that improves a conversation with a stranger. All of it improves the business model. That is the whole reason the category is full of "free" apps that want your phone number before you can say hello.
What we do keep
Being honest rather than absolutist: no service can literally store nothing. TalkLive keeps a temporary anonymous identifier in your browser so that a ban actually sticks and so your friends list works if you opt into one. Connections carry an IP address, as every internet connection does, and IPs are used for two things: rough country attribution for the country filter, and enforcing bans on people who have been reported repeatedly.
None of that is a registration and none of it identifies you personally. The privacy policy spells out exactly what exists and for how long, in plain language rather than legalese.
Why a voice platform can afford this
The usual argument for mandatory accounts is safety - that anonymity enables abuse and identity deters it. There is something to that on video platforms, where the abuse is severe and instant. It is much weaker here, because voice-only removes the category of abuse that made identity checks feel necessary in the first place.
What is left is handled by consequences rather than identity: report and block end a conversation immediately, and repeated reports produce a device and IP ban. That works on anonymous users, which is the point - it does not require knowing who anyone is.
The optional account, and what it is not for
There is a free account. It exists for exactly one thing: keeping a friends list so you can reconnect with someone you enjoyed talking to. No feature of the chat itself is behind it - not matching, not filters, not call length, not voice, not text.
